Stapleton

The newest neighborhood…
By the 1920’s, it had become clear to Denver’s Mayor Ben Stapleton that there was a future in aviation. Despite opposition of Denver’s City Council, and continuing attacks by the Denver Post over the site selection (later site selection of Denver International Airport created the same controversy), Denver Municipal Airport was dedicated in October, 1929. $430,000. were spent to buy the former cattle grazing land and construct the first facilities of what was called “Stapleton’s Folly.
By the late 1950’s, the “Jet Age” had dawned, causing traffic problems at the airport. Land at the adjacent Rocky Mountain Arsenal was acquired for runway expansion, and the airport became Stapleton International Airport in 1964. Relentless growth of both the City of Denver and air travel and Denver’s status as an airline “hub” forced more expansion onto the Arsenal, and noise became an issue for surrounding neighborhoods.
“Stapleton’s Folly’, which had contributed so much to the growth and success of Denver, had become obsolete. In 1985, Denver reached an agreement with Adams County on a proposed airport site Northwest of Stapleton. After considerable controversy and 2 elections, construction began on Denver’s new airport, while at the same time, the first planning for the old airport’s future was undertaken by the citizen group, Stapleton Tomorrow. By 1993 the city had formed a partnership with the Stapleton Development Foundation, and the future started moving toward the present.
In January of 2002, the new Visitor Center opened at Syracuse and Martin Luther King Boulevard. By the summer of 2002 the first residents moved into the first of the newly constructed homes, and the first retail business opened for business. As many as nine builders are building a diverse range of homes at Stapleton, with prices ranging from the mid $100,000.’s to the low $1,000,000.’s. With Walmart and Home Depot open, immense tracts reserved for parks and urban systems and some of the nations best builders, Stapleton promises to offer the best in new urban living, only 6.5 miles from Downtown Denver.
