Englewood History
Englewood became a town in 1903. As has been the case of most towns and cities in Colorado, the impetus to create a township was the respectable crowd tossing out the party group. As Denver grew in the late 1800’s, and began to gain some control over the rowdy elements, the drinkers and gamblers found places away from the city. Orchard Place was just a location. The area around Hampden and Broadway was famous for roadhouses, gambling establishments, and beer gardens. With the new town’s leadership passing ordinances restricting bars and gambling, most of the tavern owners left town and
Englewood started on the road to respectability.
It all started in 1858. William Green Russell and his party of Georgia prospectors had been prospecting along the Platte River and discovered gold in various places. The biggest strike however was at Little Dry Creek, with profitable quantities of gold discovered where today’s Dartmouth Avenue crosses the South Platte River. By 1859 the story of gold discoveries, having been embellished beyond all recognition, became the “Pikes Peak or Bust’ gold rush. The area around the confluence of Little Dry Creek and the Platte became Placer Camp, the first settlement in the Denver area.
In 1887, The War Department had established an Army Camp west of Englewood, officially named Fort Logan in 1889. The troops found their way to the area of South Broadway, looking for drinks and companionship in Orchard Place and riding the street car to Denver. Ft. Logan contributed to the growth of the area until after the WWII, when the State of Colorado took over the area to use as a Mental Health Center.
The largest employer in Englewood today is Swedish Hospital. In 1905 is was just a collection of tents built to house tubercular patients. By 1923 the hospital had two buildings, and by 1959 it had become Swedish Medical Center. Today it is an important medical center for the south metro Denver area.
Today Englewood is a well managed and compact city of 32,000. Redevelopment of the defunct Cinderella City shopping center has resulted in residences and shops being built with easy access to the light rail stop. Englewood has its own independent school system and a well balanced mix of residential, retail and commercial property.

Because of this, many people receiving job transfers to the many corporate address in the Denver Tech Center believe they will be in Englewood. The fact is much of the Denver Tech Center is in Denver, with the balance in Greenwood Village. Locals have a habit of referring to any and all of the many office parks straddling I-25 south of Denver as “The Denver Tech Center” or “DTC” for short, however many of the office parks are in Centennial or unincorporated Arapahoe or Douglas Counties.
